POD Book Market: Is it Growing?

By on February 25th, 2013 in News and announcements

It’s inevitable; growth and change go hand in hand. Today’s book publishing industry is a perfect example of this philosophy.

InfoTrends’ 2010–2015 U.S. Digital Production Printing Application Forecast explored 28 specific application segments and measured digitally printed application volume changes in several key market segments, including book publishing. The book market shows the largest gains of all segments, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 14.2%. 1. This represents more than 45 billion pages by 2015.  bubble

In another August 2011 study, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) released U.S. BookStats—one of modern publishing’s most comprehensive statistical surveys. It captured size, scope, revenue, and expansion across multi-platform content and sales distribution channels. Net sales for publishers increased to $27.94 billion in 2010, representing a 5.6% increase over 2008.  Publishers sold 2.57 billion net units in 2010, marking a 5.6% increase over 2008. Growth hit all segments. Higher education textbooks were up 18.7%, with sales reaching $4.55 billion in 2010. Sales of trade books grew 5.8% to $13.9 billion.

The growth is evident with all numbers pointing upwards for book publishing with the largest increases in print on demand. Print-on-demand (POD) publishing is destined to grow in volume at the expense of conventional printing. One reason is print quality; digital printing has made great strides within the last decade. By pushing technology to the limits, POD offers a valuable solution over conventional publishing.

Publishers’ Graphics Implements Barcode Quality Control System

By on May 17th, 2012 in News and announcements

Publishers’ Graphics has implemented a barcode identification system, designed to monitor and track book production from start to finish.   The program was driven by a necessity for real-time quality control and reporting.

“Now that our business has grown to three separate production facilities, including an in-plant facility in Canada, there was a need for increased quality control,“ stated Nick Lewis, President of Publishers’ Graphics.    “For just two of our customers, we are manufacturing 170,000 books per month, so it’s critical to understand where bottlenecks are and respond quickly to any problems should they arise,” he added.

The new barcode is printed on the last page of the text book block.  If any part of the job is damaged or produced at less than acceptable quality, the barcode can be scanned and a reprint of the book can be automatically generated.

Information about where the book was printed along with the date and time of printing will indicate if there is a problem with equipment, materials, or operators.  At the same time, the order entry system is continually updated to reflect the new status and to keep the customer informed.

Publishers’ Graphics continues to lead the way with innovative procedures and workflows that bring customized solutions to its customers.  Headquartered in Carol Stream, IL, PG also has in-plant satellite operations in Florence, Kentucky, and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Publishers’ Graphics Expands Global Distribution Network

By on April 12th, 2012 in News and announcements

Publishers’ Graphics has formed a strategic partnership with an India-based printer that will expand their network of overseas print providers.   This new print provider will manufacture and distribute a full range of print to order products including hardcover and softcover titles.

The addition of an India-based partner brings together a growing network of overseas print  manufacturing and distribution facilities that includes the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Singapore, Russia, and Australia.   With an established global network stretching from Canada to Australia, PG has the reach needed to optimize sales in the fast-growing European and Asian markets.

“Our customers will gain access to new sales channels without the worry of dealing with importation and customs issues and shipping and warehousing costs,” says Nick Lewis, President of Publishers’ Graphics.   He adds, “Expanding our global print network to include India is just one more way we’re making PG the most cost-effective and convenient option available for publishers to sell more books to more readers both in India and around the world.”

PG expands its market to India

These strategic partnerships enable customers to streamline their workflows, eliminate customs and shipping expenses and consolidate ordering and invoicing.  While it may have previously taken 20-30 days to print and ship books to overseas locations, books can now be printed and delivered within 3-5 days, resulting in significant cost and time savings.

As global distribution systems evolve, Publishers’ Graphics continues to lead the way with innovative procedures and workflows that bring customized solutions to its customers.   Headquartered in Carol Stream, IL, PG also has in-plant satellite operations in Florence, Kentucky, and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
